revised versions of the English Bible
- revised versions of the English Bible
The ‘Revised Version’ (RV) by a group of scholars in England was a conservative revision of the AV in the light of abundant new textual evidence. The NT was published in 1881; the OT in 1885. The fidelity of the translation to the original made RV the standard Bible for students, but it was not well received by the public at large, who found it wooden and pedantic. Not surprisingly, when it was adapted for the American public as the Standard Version, there were many alterations.
The AV of 1611 was itself a revision of the Bishops' Bible (1568), which was a revision of the Great Bible (1549), Coverdale's revision of the Matthew Bible (1537).
After 1881, the American Standard Version, which incorporated the preferred alterations to RV, appeared in 1901. The RSV NT, a revision of the Standard Version, was published in the USA in 1946, followed by the OT in 1952, and the Apocrypha in 1957. These immediately enjoyed a high reputation for students both in America and Great Britain. A committee continued to watch over the RSV and eventually the NRSV was published in 1989, embodying the latest knowledge of MSS and using inclusive language. NRSV represents the end term of a long process of revision since the 16th cent.
